Before I started my productized service in the early days, I extensively researched other similar services that were already up and running before mine.
I knew about them because they were growing so fast, they became sizzling hot in a short time. Some of them grew to 5 figures per month in less than 6 months.
To me, that growth is phenomenal.
I was so curious about their secrets that I even paid and signed up for their services to truly experience how they work and what’s so good about them for real.
The services I mostly signed up for were design-related since that’s the industry I’m in.
You know what?
They sucked, they all do.
I won’t mention names, because this is my personal opinion and experience with them.
Bear with me.
At that time I was so sure I could do better designs and I could create better work than them.
I have the talent! I know I have it.
If others could grow this fast with such poor designs, with my top-notch quality work, people would flock to me just like chicks running to their mama (imagine me snapping my fingers like Thanos).
Let Go of Your Talent Ego
Boy was I wrong.
Turned out nobody cared about my designs.
They compared me with other productized services and asked me what’s so different about us.
My portfolio to them was like:
Whatever, this kind of work is expected.
But…but, everyone keeps saying I’m good, that I can sell my artwork, and my design pieces, and I could win awards for that.
You know what that’s like.
It’s like how I can bake cakes at home and how friends tell me I can set up shop.
Same idea.
I realised I was in love with my own designs.
I was so attached to how I could create work that was perfect-looking to me that I ignored one thing.

The Goal of Your Business
It comes down to this:
Having a great talent for creating a deliverable does not mean your business will flourish because of that.
It also doesn’t mean your work will fetch a high price.
It has to do with knowing who you are serving, what is their pain point and what they are looking for to remove that pain forever.
When you come into the market to help with that, your business will grow.
You will start to see people coming to you for your solution rather than you going around trying to sell them something they don’t think they need.
If you struggle with this, you can learn more in my new course, Productized Kit. It’s jam-packed with actionable, step-by-step guidance for helping you build a service once and sell it like a product unlimited times.
At the end of the day, you can spend months creating a pretty portfolio, but if nobody is suffering from a pain that needs your pretty portfolio, it’s dead on arrival.
That's all for this week.
Best,
Marilyn
